Die Ontwaking wins at inaugural Indie Karoo Festival

Die Ontwaking walked away with the prize for Best Feature Film at the first Indie Karoo Film Festival held in Prince Albert earlier this month. The debut feature film from Director Johnny Breedt, was applauded for breaking new boundaries in local film genres.

Over 50 films were screened over the 3-day festival, of which the main aim being to celebrate independent filmmaking. Veteran actor Paul Eilers who has graced South African screens for more than 40 years, was honoured with the Golden Aloe Lifetime Achievement Award . Eilers also plays a leading role in Die Ontwaking . Shot entirely in Cape Town in early 2014, the film is based on the first book of a Trilogy by acclaimed author, Chris Karsten.

Abel (Gys de Villiers), owner of a small gallery specializing in African Masks and Art, is also currently curating a collection of tattoo's belonging to beautiful female victims, that will fit his Cosmic Journal theme.

Ella Nesser (Juanita de Villiers) is the attractive, but inexperienced murder detective in charge of the case, her main task to track down the serial killer who has been praying on the city's young women.

Abel is smart and the young detective struggles to make headway with the case.

For his upcoming fiftieth birthday, Abel has a special gift in mind for himself - a new face : that of a beautiful young woman, perhaps that of a young female detective.

The film is a collaboration between The Showroom Theatre, Advantage Entertainment and Enigma Pictures.
