New study commissioned by Civolution reveals post-decryption theft is the weakest point in the content delivery chain

Eindhoven, The Netherlands, September 11, 2013 - Civolution, the leading provider of technology and solutions for identifying, managing and monetizing content today announced the results of The Multiscreen Video and Piracy: The Big Picture survey report, carried out by Digital TV Europe.

Key findings of the survey:

Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) is considered the most efficient revenue model for online video

46.5% of respondents believe the viewers are likely to pay for content if good enough quality is provided

Almost half of the respondents believe post-decryption theft is the weakest point in the content delivery chain, with 85.4% of them stating that post-decryption theft is a threat to revenue.

73.1% of respondents rate digital watermarking as an important weapon in the fight against piracy

37.5% of respondents consider that content owners should tackle the problem of illegal content redistribution online

Piracy threatens business models, revenues and thousands of jobs in the content industry, says Sheila Cassells, Executive Director of Audiovisual Anti-Piracy Alliance (AAPA). Civolution and Digital TV Europe partnered to canvas the views of senior media industry executives around the world about their perception of online video piracy and the solutions currently available. Respondents to the survey report expressed concerns about the relative lack of security of content available online, notably post-decryption but they remain optimistic as to the willingness of viewers to pay for content if good enough quality is provided.

The Civolution Piracy: The Big Picture' survey report shows that the industry is well aware that content piracy is hindering the development of the media and entertainment businesses, and underlines how important a threat to the industry it has become. With almost all respondents to the survey being aware of post-decryption piracy, it's clear that the industry needs to tackle these security issues now, said Andy Nobbs, CMO, Civolution.

Interestingly the survey shows that a large proportion of video professionals see digital watermarking as an important weapon in the fight against piracy. Another key finding is the belief that consumers will pay if they could have early access to content as part of a high-quality experience. Those findings reinforce our belief that watermarking, which is non-intrusive for the consumers as it does not alter their viewing experience, is increasingly playing a critical role in deterring piracy and in creating interesting new business models and exciting entertainment applications, concluded Nobbs.
