Smart Gls: Deutsche Telekom and ZEI Collaborate in the Field of Smart Gls

At the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona, Deutsche Telekom and ZEISS announced future collaboration in the field of smart glasses. The goal is to explore and drive the application potential and future of data glasses.

With innovative smart glass optics and leading-edge connectivity, ZEISS and Deutsche Telekom combine two elements that are critical for the success of these products. In one of its own venture companies ZEISS developed the prototype of an optical system that enables a small and wearable design for data glasses. In such data glasses a data and information field is projected into the wearers field of view. As if on a "flying screen," info, apps, images, etc. are projected in front of the eye.

Telekom is contributing the technology for the direct network connection of this technical demonstrator and is working on innovative solutions so that the technology currently still integrated into the wearable can be partly saved to a cloud. Network technologies like 5G will offer the technical foundation for this in the future.

In the next phase it is planned to develop the application fields to the point of marketability. To achieve this goal, efforts are still required in many areas: in hardware, software, displays, applications user interfaces and connectivity. Telekom and ZEISS will jointly drive these developments.
