A total of 114 short animated films were submitted to FupiToons Festival presented by the African Animation Network (AAN) in partnership with Cartoon Network & Ster- Kinekor. These short films were submitted from across the length and breadth of the African continent with submissions coming from; Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso.

Wendy Spinks, FupiToons Festival director & head of Content at AAN; We ve been astounded by the volume and quality of the submissions. We re excited to announce the official selection of films. The festival covers a broad selection of animated shorts with something for everyone but, most importantly kids aged 2 - 12 years old.

NB: these films have been selected pending final certificate from the Film & Publication Board ratings and are subject to change.

Spinks continues; Having received 114 submissions, it was extremely difficult to include everything into a FupiToons block whilst also conforming to the Film & Publication Board regulations for the festival age demographic. In future editions of Fupitoons Festival we intend to open the age demographic range up and have different blocks of content catering for a wider audience and variety of content.

FupiToons Trailer:

The FupiToons Festival trailer has been airing since 13 October across all Gauteng theatres, screening the animated feature film My Little Pony.

Initially it was planned for Fupitoons Festival to be hosted at Cinema Nouveau, Rosebank but, was then changed to Ster-Kinekor, The Zone, Rosebank. Lola Gallant, head of Alternative Content, Ster-Kinekor, explains the methodology; Initially we were expecting animated films of the arthouse genre which speaks to our Nouveau audience but, once we saw the quality of the submissions coupled with the intended commercial target audience for content of this type, the decision to change venues in line with the demographic of kids aged 2 - 12 years was simple.

FupiToons Festival will run at Ster-Kinekor, The Zone, Rosebank, Johannesburg over the following dates:

Friday, 27 October 17h30

Saturday, 28 October 14h30 & 17h30

Sunday, 29 October 14h30

Delegates attending DISCOP Johanneburg, members of industry and media are invited to the Industry Premiere which will take place on Thursday, 26 October - 19h00 for 20h00.
