Sherlock, Downton Abbey help UK TV exports increase ten per cent

UK TV exports have risen by ten per cent in the last year, rising to £1.32 billion in 2015/16.

The likes of Sherlock, Downton Abbey and The Night Manager have helped the UK television industry increase its revenue across the globe, according to the latest UK Television Exports Report from Pact.

The US remains the biggest export market, with sales increasing by 16 per cent in 2015/16 to £497 million.

Australia is the second biggest territory, while China has seen an increase of 40 per cent year-on-year. With the two countries having recently signed a new co-production treaty, that figure is expected to rise in the years to come.

Revenue from Japan represented the greatest percentage increase in the last year, rising by 48 per cent.

Completed TV programming was the largest source of revenue in 2015/16, generating £668 million. Sales of digital rights increased by 79 per cent to £248 million - making it the second largest source of TV revenue.

Pact CEO John McVay commented: UK TV content continues to be highly sought after around the world. The impressive level of year-on-year growth demonstrates that the sector is embracing the challenges of the global marketplace and is adept at exploiting new opportunities.

However, with Brexit on the horizon, continued support from the government will be crucial if we are to ensure that UK companies can carry on punching above their weight on the world stage.
