J Bullet heads to Sydney Film Festival

Hot on the heels of two sell-out screenings at the 65th Berlinale in February this year, Joe Bullet makes it's way to the Sydney Film Festival in Australia taking place 3 - 14 June 2015

Sydney Film Festival http://www.sff.org.au is the 7th international festival that Joe Bullet has been invited to in less than 11 months. We are very excited to have the film showcased in Australia , says Benjamin Cowley, CEO of Gravel Road Entertainment Group - the company responsible for the digital restoration of the film.

Joe Bullet, directed by Louis de Witt and written/produced by Tonie van der Merwe, was first released in 1973 and after it's 2nd screening at the Eyethu Cinema in Soweto, the censor board banned it. Van der Merwe appealed the ban which was later lifted, but the film was never commercially released again and the only two prints in existence disappeared into obscurity until 2012 when Gravel Road found one of the prints in the garage of van der Merwe and assumed the responsibility to digitally restore the film as part of Retro Afrika Bioscope, Gravel Road's film preservation initiative and independent release label for classic African cinema.

I didn't think anyone was interested in seeing this old film , says van der Merwe. It's like a dream, I can't believe that all these years later people are queuing up to watch this film .

The film stars the late Ken Gampu, Cocky Two Bull and Abigail Kubeka and even features a cameo of the current Bafana Bafana (South Africa's national soccer team) coach, Shakes Mashaba as one of the soccer players.

Joe Bullet screens Friday 5th June at 18h15 and Friday 12th June at 18h35 at Dendy Opera Quays in Sydney.
