30TH ANNUAL HISPANIC HERITAGE AWARDS HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR DURING PBS BROADCAST

DPA Microphones Deliver Natural Sound at Washington D.C.'s Historic Warner Theater.

Joseph Foley, audio supervisor and general manager of Capital City Sound, turned to a selection of DPA microphones to deliver crisp, clear sound for the 30th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards, recently televised on PBS. For the evening's festivities, Foley, an avid user of DPA mics, employed DPA's d:screet 4098 Supercardioid Podium Microphone on lecterns and d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphone on strings.

The d:screet 4098 is one of the best lectern/podium microphones that I have ever used, says Foley. It has an extremely low profile and excellent rejection of plosives. It also has great coverage in front of the element and sounds very natural. The d:screet 4098 was the absolute perfect solution for this type of application. It sounds fantastic. I can even rig up a set with the MicroDot to an adapter to a wireless belt pack if I need to make the lecterns wireless. This provides for ease of use and movement to clear the stage quickly for performances. This is especially useful for an awards show where there are several speakers coming and going on stage.

Foley also relied on additional DPA mics to capture the orchestra. The d:vote 4099 is an incredible microphone especially on strings, adds Foley. It requires very little EQ to clean up the tone of the strings. The d:vote 4099 has excellent rejection of the surrounding sounds, so you get a very pure sound off of the instrument you are miking. I also love its various instrument microphone clips. I miked our entire orchestra with very few stands, as the d:vote 4099 clipped onto most of the instruments. This led to a very clean stage look, which the producers really liked since the event was recorded for broadcast. With most other brands, I would have to use a forest of mic stands to accomplish the same thing.

I could not have achieved such natural sound reproduction for the Hispanic Heritage Awards without DPA, says Foley. They make great microphones and using them on this project was a win for everyone. I try to use DPA whenever possible, as will be the case with the d:screet 4098 for a new documentary that I am working on.

The Hispanic Heritage Awards, established by the White House in 1987 to commemorate the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S., are considered among the highest honors for Latinos by Latinos, and recognize notable Latinos who have had a positive impact on America and the world in various fields. Honorees have included celebrities, physicians, scientists, educators, innovators, public officials and community and business leaders selected by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation.
