KCET Honors Kevin Costner with The Lumi re Award

Presented by the KCET Cinema Series

Film Expert Pete Hammond to Host Q&A with Costner following an Advanced Film Screening of Black and White

BURBANK, Calif. - Nov. 26, 2014 - KCET, the nations largest independent public television station, will honor multi-award winning actor/filmmaker Kevin Costner with The Lumi re Award presented by the KCET Cinema Series. The award recognizes excellence, artistry and innovation by an actor or filmmaker for their outstanding contribution to television or motion pictures.

Sponsored by the E. Hofert Dailey Trust, the special event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. at the ArcLight Sherman Oaks. A limited amount of tickets can be purchased at www.kcet.org/lumiere.

The event, part of KCETs yearlong 50th anniversary celebration and the 20th year of the KCET Cinema Series, will celebrate Costners achievements and contributions to film and television. Dick Cook, film executive and KCETLink Board chair, will present the award.

It is both an honor and a privilege to recognize Kevin Costner with KCETs Lumi re Award, said Dick Cook. Kevin has always been creatively fearless and it goes without saying that his body of work, both in front of and behind the camera, is nothing short of spectacular. He is a true visionary in every sense of the word and I cant think of anyone more deserving to receive this prestigious award than Kevin.

I would like to thank the E. Hofert Dailey Trust and the patrons of KCET for this distinguished honor, said Kevin Costner. As a movie fan myself, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had the career that I have in this business, and to have worked with wonderful actors, directors, writers and crews all of whom I have a great admiration for. I share this recognition with all of those who have been a part of my journey in film.

Guests will also watch an advanced screening of BLACK AND WHITE, starring Costner and Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer. Written and directed by Mike Binder (who also worked with Costner on the Upside of Anger), the film depicts attorney Elliott Anderson (Costner), a widower, who medicates his grief with alcohol and struggles with the finer points of raising his biracial granddaughter, Eloise (newcomer Jillian Estell). Elliotts world is turned upside-down when the childs paternal grandmother, Rowena (Spencer), demands that Eloise be brought under the care of her father, Reggie (Andr Holland), a drug addict who abandoned his daughter when her mother died in childbirth. A custody battle ensues that prompts long-buried presumptions and prejudices to come bursting to the surface.

Immediately following the screening, Costner will participate in a lively Q&A with nationally recognized film expert Pete Hammond.

Costner has played iconic roles in such box-office hits as No Way Out, Bull Durham, Field Of Dreams, The Bodyguard, Wyatt Earp, JFK, The Untouchables, Tin Cup and Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. He produced, directed and starred in Dances With Wolves, which won seven Academy Awards , including Best Picture and Best Director. He went on to direct The Postman and Open Range. Recently, Costner produced and starred in the History Channels record-setting mini-series Hatfields & McCoys, for which he won an Emmy, Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award for his performance. When he is not making movies, Costner sings lead vocals and plays lead guitar in the band Modern West.

Lumi re, meaning light in French, helps entertainment legends like Costner shine; it is also in homage to brothers Auguste and Louis Lumi re, who were the first filmmakers in history dating back to 1894.
