BEVERLY HILLS - Actor Chris Hemsworth and Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the nominations for the 86th Academy Awards (www.oscar.com), which will take place on Sunday, March 2. In the Animated Feature Film category, three of the nominees were those that recently competed for a Golden Globe - The Croods, Despicable Me 2, and Frozen. They are joined by Ernest & Celestine and The Wind Rises. Disney/Pixars Monsters University did not make the cut.
In Visual Effects, Gravity and The Hobbit join Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger, and Star Trek Into Darkness.
Members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories - actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of multi-branch screening committees.
