South African photographer shortlisted at the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards

Katherine Young, who is currently based in London, got the nod for her image Hubris Part 1. The image of the new US embassy in the UK made the shortlist in the Open Architecture category.

All the more impressive is the fact that this year's awards received a record number of entries, 326,997 in total from photographers in 195 countries. Young had the following to say about the photograph:

Philadelphia architect Kieran Timberlake has won the competition to design the new US embassy in the UK. Called New London Embassy, it was built in Nine Elms beside the River Thames. Essentially it is a glass cube enveloped in shimmering sails of plastic.

She added that the transparent crystalline cube' was intended to symbolise transparency, openness, and equality', while the unusual form of the building's facade was designed to minimise solar gain and glare while still allowing natural light in.

Young had visited the location twice, with her most recent visit 12 months ago. At the time, she found the building utterly fascinating and decided there and then to capture its unusual facade.

She explained that her intention was to create an image that encapsulates the uniqueness of this building.

The shortlisted images will all be exhibited at Somerset House, in London before starting a world tour to showcase the talented artists identified by the competition.

Young will now wait to find out if she's won her category and still has a chance of winning Open Photographer of the year, with prizes including the latest cutting-edge Sony camera equipment, flights to the London Awards ceremony, and $5 000.
