Mirantis and VMware Announce Partnership to Simplify Cloud Deployments on Mirantis OpenStack Distribution with VMware Technologies
Companies Work to Enable Customers to Use Mirantis OpenStack Distribution with VMware Enterprise-Grade Virtualization Solutions for Compute, Networking and Storage
Palo Alto and HONG KONG / Open Stack Summit (Nov. 5, 2013) Mirantis and VMware today announced a partnership to develop and deliver solutions that help customers accelerate large-scale cloud deployments based on the Mirantis OpenStack distribution and VMware technologies. With this agreement, Fuel, the open source tool for OpenStack deployment and management pioneered by Mirantis, will add support for automating the deployment of the Mirantis OpenStack distribution in conjunction with VMware vCenter Server and VMware NSX technologies.
VMware has demonstrated its commitment to the open source community by making significant code contributions and enabling its technology to work well with OpenStack, said Boris Renski, co-founder and executive vice president, Mirantis. We see a lot of interest in both VMware vSphere and VMware NSX network virtualization from Mirantis OpenStack customers, and this partnership will help us provide the best possible experience for them. Through this partnership, Mirantis and VMware will be able to drive innovations that simplify the deployment of highly scalable and high-performing clouds.
Mirantis has a strong track record in helping customers deploy OpenStack, said Dan Wendlandt, director of product management for OpenStack at VMware. The Mirantis OpenStack distribution gives enterprises a broad selection of supported operating systems, hypervisors and storage back-ends. Mirantis gives customers the power and flexibility to deploy Mirantis OpenStack packages alongside Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform and Ubuntu OpenStack.
OpenStack enables the use of different compute, network, and storage technologies to build clouds. VMware provides a proven portfolio of best-in-class components, including technologies such as VMware vSphere , and new innovations such as VMware NSX and VMware Virtual SAN , for building OpenStack clouds. These solutions are backed by a dedicated software development team at VMware focused on OpenStack.
Using Fuel, Mirantis and VMware will enable the automated configuration of:
The OpenStack Compute service (Nova) with the VMware vCenter Server driver;
The OpenStack Networking service (Neutron) with the VMware NSX driver (formerly the Nicira NVP driver);
The OpenStack Block Storage service (Cinder) with the VMware VMDK datastore driver.
Compatibility with OpenStack Havana and future releases.
Additionally, Mirantis and VMware will coordinate around reference architectures and commercial support, and Mirantis will provide enterprise-class support for OpenStack on top of VMware products.
