B-Side Project announce winners of 2019 remix competition

The winners were announced on April 4th at Londons Tileyard.

Regular SOS readers will remember the annual B-Side Project, which exists to promote musical collaborations between upcoming artists and remixers. Since 2009, the Project has awarded young remixers and artists for collaborations that it has helped to bring about through its annual competition, with support from key industry music artists, labels, equipment manufacturers, and of course Sound On Sound magazine!

2019s competition was a bit different, focusing on student remix entries with the support of Tileyard Education (the postgraduate education centre at the Tileyard creative community near Kings Cross, in London), manufacturers Genelec and Prism Sound, the respected electronic music label Hospital Records/Med School, and its artist Etherwood. Between October last year and January, over 100 students from 12 higher education music colleges all over the country competed to produce the best remixes of one of Etherwoods tracks, A Hundred Oceans, after being provided with the track stems by the artist.

Entries were judged after the competition closed in January and the winners were announced at an event at Tileyard Studios north of Kings Cross last night, Thursday April 4th, which was streamed live on the SOS Facebook page.

The evening began with a fascinating panel discussion on the legalities of copyright, sampling and remixing, moderated by Cambridge-based IP lawyer, musician and DJ Chris Hawkes, which featured house music producer and DJ Adam Zurra, producer, remixer and singer Estelle Rubio, and Vertical Rooms studio owner, musician, producer, and remixer Pete Brazier, as well as Etherwood. Topics covered included what a remix is now, how far a remix can be taken before its a new track in its own right and the sometimes frustrating legalities associated with sample use and clearance.

After the discussion concluded, the four winners were announced from the group of 12 finalists. The three runners-up, who all won Hospital Records sample packs and merchandise and ACS ear protection, were as follows:

Hospital Records artist and drum and bass producer Etherwood announcing the overall 2019 competition winner.

The main prizewinner, for Best Overall Remix, was Kacper Kurczynski from Spirit Studios college in Manchester, also known as KASPA (below right). He received his award directly from the artist whose track he had remixed, Etherwood (above). As the main winner, Kacper took home an Audio-technica microphone and headphones, a pair of Genelec 8030 speakers, Hospital Records/Med School sample packs and ACS ear protection, and he will be joining Etherwood in the studio for a creative session soon. His college Spirit Studio did even better, getting gear worth over £10,000, including a SADiE mastering suite, Prism Sound Lyra audio interface, and a pair of Genelec 8331 monitors.

The dozen finalists all received copies of Etherwoods latest album In Stillness (from which the remix track A Hundred Oceans is taken), ACS ear protection and a free subscription to Sound On Sound.
