South African producer scores "Folly" movie rights

South African producer, Greig Buckle, of Enigma Pictures announced today his successful acquisition of the film rights to Jassy MacKenzie's novel, Folly, through the Blake Friedman Literary Agency in the UK.

Earning international acclaim as a crime writer, the South African author shifts her genre to erotica in Folly with reviewers drawing parallels to the runaway success story of Fifty Shades of Grey. MacKenzie's story follows the roller-coaster ride of Emma Caine, who is pushing forty and life is hitting her hard. Her husband has been brain damaged, she's lost her job, and she might lose her home. Instead of giving up, Emma starts hitting back.

Drawing on experiences from a misspent youth, she opens a domination dungeon in an outbuilding in her garden and sets herself up as a dominatrix. Whipping, torturing and abusing the wealthy slaves who soon start lining up for her services is surprisingly easy for Emma, especially since she has no sexual contact with her clients. In fact, she believes them all to be sick perverts. The unthinkable happens when she falls in love with one of them.

Although written in the erotica genre, Buckle says the book is about much more than sex. It' was also the relevance of the current global economic and social climate that caught my attention, but the tongue-in-cheek style stops it taking itself too seriously. It's a feisty and humorous read.

Published in South Africa by Random Struik in February 2013, the book has gathered considerable critical acclaim in it's domestic territory where press have described Mackenzie's story as vivacious and witty' (Sunday Times, Lifestyle Magazine), and an unusual boy-meets-girl story, an entertaining story filled with suspense and humor. (Maya Fowler, Cape Times) while the entertainment website, Just Curious reviewer, Siyamthanda Skota, says, it's compelling, and just like good sex, the book is utterly satisfying.

Buckle, who aims to make this an entirely South African production - where Mackenzie sets her story - is in final talks with multiple award-winning South African screenwriter/director Amanda Evans to pen the screen adaptation as well as helm the movie, and is aiming for principal photography date early 2015.

Buckle is confident that the story will translate well onto screen, and that Mackenzie's voice speaks to global audiences. The strong female protagonist who reawakens her inner dominatrix, finds and loses love, and in the process frees herself to triumph against the influences shackling her to the past will, in my opinion, make a poignant and entertaining motion picture aimed at a large, both female and male market.
