Ruian Channel One to expand to Europe and Asia

Russian broadcaster Channel One has announced plans to expand its reach to European and Asian markets, with the help of Globecast.

Globecast will bridge the gap by providing dual-illumination on HotBird and Asia Sat 5, with an MPEG-4 channel in addition to the existing MPEG-2 service it already provides.

The Russian channel carries a mixture of news, documentaries, feature film productions and entertainment content. Existing content is currently being re-broadcast to audiences in these newfound territories.

Channel One's live signal is received at Globecast's Moscow PoP, where it is delivered to London. From there, it is uplinked to HotBird for European transmission. Similarly for Asian audiences, the signal reaches Hong Kong via uplinking to Asia Sat 5.

The addition of the MPEG-4 channel - and the dual-illumination - means that Channel One can migrate from its existing MPEG-2 SD channel as and when required.
