Lightware MX2 matrix switchers now support 5K with latest...

European leader in signal management solutions, Lightware, has announced a valuable new feature of its MX2 matrix switchers. The most recent firmware update unlocks 5K resolution support, with no hardware modifications required. From today, integrators can boost performance and support for 5k ultrawide displays simply by applying the latest firmware.

This update represents a practical response to the growing number of AV environments demanding 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratios, says Lightware CEO, Gergely Vida. Our MX2 switchers can now support significantly more screen real estate and sharper visuals without sacrificing system reliability.

Trusted by AV professionals worldwide, the MX2 series is part of the world's largest matrix switcher portfolio from Lightware. Already established in the most demanding AV environments, MX2 offers ultra-low frame latency, uncompressed 4K60 4:4:4 switching, and reliable EDID handling.

This update enables MX2 devices to handle 5120 2160 resolution via HDMI 2.0 (30Hz 4:4:4 or 60Hz 4:2:0) and DisplayPort 1.2 (30Hz 4:4:4). Most importantly for existing customers, MX2 units already in the field are instantly compatible, so there s no need for any hardware or cabling upgrades. This firmware update also marks a milestone, with the MX2 series becoming Lightware's first product line to offer 5K switching.

With the new 5K support, the MX2 becomes even more versatile, without losing the rock-solid specs it was built upon. This reputation for reliable performance was proven at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2025, where MX2 was used for handling video signals for Epson's show stopping globe installation. In Japan's XROSS Museum, the MX2 played a central role in enabling an immersive visual experience. Yu Nakamura from TOPPAN Inc. comments, Lightware's MX2, with its non-blocking switching and reliable 18 Gbps performance, gave us confidence that the video distribution would be executed, which was crucial for the immersive environment we wanted to create.
