There are many young and talented writers from various communities across South Africa who wish to pursue a career in the theatre, film, literature and journalism and yet do not have access to information and other opportunities presented by the numerous creative and media industries.
The Young Writers Programme is an initiative of the Tshwane One City Film Festival and will be presented in partnership with Windblow Media, a production company based in Pretoria.
According to Basil Dube, festival director of the Tshwane One City Film Festival, the Young Writer Programme is designed to nurture and develop young writers from diverse disciplines including film, theatre, television, literature and journalism.
We are committed to nurturing and producing writers who are well equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to enter the mainstream literary and audiovisual sectors said Dube
The formation of the Young Writers Programme is a direct response to the needs and aspirations of these writers, who mostly come from rural and historically disadvantaged backgrounds across South Africa.
The programme will be established as a resource forum with a mission to produce writers who are equipped with the necessary creative and business skills, as well as a clear understanding of the operations of the various sectors they have chosen.
OBJECTIVES OF THE YOUNG WRITERS; PROGRAMME
The Young Writers Programme aims to :
* Create a vibrant and sustainable platform to nurture and develop young and talented writers
* Act as a premier resource centre for the development and advancement of young writers, particularly women writers
* Promote a culture of reading and discussion amongst young writers
* Organize monthly workshops, seminars, film screenings, reading sessions and discussions
* Act as a main link between young writers and established writers
Provide support and guidance to young writers in the area of script development, publishing and audiovisual production
* Collaborate with various organizations and institutions in supporting the development and promotion of young writers
* Publish a quarterly newsletter and website to promote the work of its members
Convene an annual Young Writers Festival and Expo
ACTIVITIES
The YWP will convene on the last Thursday of each month and present its various activities and programmes which include but not limited to:
Poetry Readings
Stage drama
Scriptwriting Workshops
Film Screenings
Panel Discussions
Conversations with Authors and Screenwriters
Script Readings
Networking and Information Sessions
YOUNG WRITERS PROGRAMME LAUNCH
The Young Writers Programme will be officially launched in Pretoria on the 30 October 2014. This historic event is expected to attract young writers from the various regions of Gauteng and other provinces.
The launching event will be attended by various industry professionals, authors, writers, publishers and government representatives.
