State of Alarm recipients with guest speaker Karrina Nolan

Screen Australia's Indigenous Department have announced the successful recipients of the first stage of the State of Alarm documentary initiative.

Eight creative teams will receive funding to develop their projects, which aim to provide insights and provoke thought about Indigenous solutions to universal environmental issues.

Penny Smallacombe, Head of Screen Australia's Indigenous Department said: State of Alarm is an incredibly unique opportunity for these 14 creatives to learn from experienced filmmakers, as well as climate change scientists and researchers. We anticipate that this next phase of development will be a rewarding experience for these emerging documentary makers and eco-warriors.

The projects are:

Burning Ground from Genevieve Grieves (writer/director) and Kieran Satour (writer/producer)

Forgotten Voices from Daniel King (writer/director)

Guardians of the Country from Bessy-May Taylor (director), Gary Hamaguchi (writer) and Jodie Bell (producer)

No Fracking Way from Levina Letchford (writer/director) and Viviana Petyarre (producer)

Point of No Return from Daniel Riches (director) and Luke Riches (writer/producer)

Shark Dreaming from Ashley Gibb (writer/director)

Silent Killer of the Great Barrier Reef from Ian Ludwick (writer/producer) and Chantelle Murray (director)

The Aboriginal Carbon Fund from Lyndsay Urquhart (writer/director/producer)

Earlier this week the successful creative teams participated in a development workshop in Sydney. During the three-day event the teams were mentored by established filmmakers Beck Cole (The Warriors, Little J & Big Cuz), Dena Curtis (Ella, 8MMM Radio), Danielle MacLean (Redfern Now, Croker Island Exodus) and Eddie Martin (Have You Seen The Listers, All This Mayhem).

The teams also heard from guest speakers including impact producer Terri Calder, screenwriter and co-founder of the climate change action group 350.australia John Collee, director Sascha Ettinger-Epstein (The Pink House), producer Kate Hodges (Frackman), documentary filmmaker Jen Peedom (Sherpa, Mountain), campaigner and community facilitator Karrina Nolan, editor Matthew Walker (Go Back to Where You Came From) and executive director of Good Pitch Australia and Shark Island Institute Malinda Wink.

They were also joined by leading environmental and climate change scientists including Dr Annika Dean, Dr Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick and Dr Adam Stow.

Following the first development stage, a shortlist of projects will then be selected for production funding and will be announced in the first half of 2018.
