South African struggle icons feature at DIFF --

Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa, an award- winning documentary which tells the story of Constitutional Court Judge and author Albie Sachs, and The Other Man: FW De Klerk and The End of Apartheid, which features South Africa s former president, will screen as part of the Durban International Film Festival. The festival takes place from 17 to 27 July at a number of venues in KwaZulu Natal and will host a wide selection of both local and international films.

Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa takes audiences on a journey spanning from Sach s first arrest when he took part in a defiance campaign during the struggle, to his role as a Constitutional Court judge. The film presents archive material and interviews with Dennis Goldberg, Ben Turok, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi amongst others and is set against the dramatic events which lead to the abolishment the apartheid regime in South Africa.

Directed by Abby Ginzberg, Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa will screen on Saturday 19 July at the Suncoast Theatre at 13h45 and on Monday 21 July at 17h45 at the Musgrave Theatre. Sachs and Ginzberg will be in attendance for questions and discussions following both screenings.

The Other Man: FW De Klerk and The End of Apartheid features discussions with De Klerk, South Africa s last president from the white apartheid-era who, in less than four years, went from being Mandelas jailor to his deputy president. The film also includes in-depth, exclusive interviews with Thabo Mbeki (former president of SA), Roelf Meyer, Leon Wessels (former minister of the De Klerk cabinet), Albie Sachs (anti-apartheid activist and former judge on the Constitutional Court of South Africa), Mathews Phosa (former ANC Treasurer General and former anti-apartheid activist), Yasmin Sooka (former commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission), Richard Goldstone (headed the Goldstone Commission investigations into political violence in SA), and many other prominent figures who played an important role in pre- and post-apartheid South Africa.

Directed by Nicolas Rossier, the film is a co-production between the US and South Africa and was produced by Baraka Productions in New York and Naashon Zalk Media in Cape Town. It screens on Saturday 19 July at 20h45 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and on Monday 21 July at 16h00 at the Southern Sun Elangeni hotel.
