ACCESS:VFX founder Simon Devereux looks at the drive towards diversity and inclusion in the visual effects industry, and how the industry is becoming democratised thanks to the availability of technology.
What industry trends have particularly stood out for you in 2023, and why? I've certainly seen a sustained drive towards diversity and inclusion across industry, focusing not only on recruitment and outreach, but also on cultivating an environment that appreciates and acknowledges diverse perspectives within studios, particularly post-lockdown' and the reframing of what culture' looks like through a new hybrid lens.
Over the past six plus years, ACCESS: VFX has actively pursued the goal of increasing industry diversity, equity and inclusion, and now we're seeing noticeable impact. More narratives from people belonging to underrepresented groups are emerging, attributed to their participation in our worldwide e-mentoring programme or from attendance at our events. These experiences have significantly expanded their networks and ultimately led to increased employment opportunities, which has been wonderful to hear!
What impact are you seeing those trends having on the media and entertainment industry? On screen for sure! I think the emphasis on diversity in creative teams has brought more varied and authentic stories into studios and to the forefront. Different perspectives, improved representation and fresh experiences are being woven into narratives. This is making content more relatable and engaging for diverse audiences. Whether it's the new wave of mainstream feature animation such as Nimona, Spider-Verse and Turning Red, or the increased representation we're seeing in features and episodic content like Barbie, CODA and Bodies. Too many to mention here!
The accessibility of visual effects tools and technology has certainly democratised the industry, fostering creativity and innovation from a more extensive pool of talent. There are multitudes of visual effects software tutorials all over YouTube and social platforms such as TikTok, and this brings with it an influx of new voices and fresh ideas that will push the boundaries of what's achievable in the industry.
How do you see those trends developing further in 2024? With the new hybrid landscape and increasing acceptance and optimisation of remote work, we can expect even more sophisticated collaboration tools and improved technology for seamless global teamwork. This will facilitate a more interconnected creative community, which is a really exciting prospect.
This year also saw ACCESS: VFX gain exposure as part of the festival circuit, including our European chapter launch at FMX in Stuttgart, and more recently at VIEW Conference in Turin. With the recent European chapter launch and expansion of our global e-mentoring platform, and talks of growing our movement on Asia and India, I'm excited that 2024 will see our message reach an even wider global audience, resulting in more diverse voices entering the industry!
Do you expect to see any new trends within the industry in 2024, and what will they be? Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are big talking points and are becoming more prevalent across the industry. We're seeing how the technology can be used to streamline workflows, enhancing creativity, and potentially expand possibilities for artists and their work.
Additionally, as several studios transition into B Corps, I anticipate a growing emphasis on environmentally friendly, sustainable practices and more conscious storytelling that raises awareness about societal issues. This could influence the industry's narratives and production methods, without a doubt!
