Jim Goodmon To Receive Honorary Doctorate at UNC Spring Commencement

The UNC School of Media and Journalism has announced that CBC CEO Jim Goodmon will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hills spring commencement on Sunday, May 13, 2018. Citing Goodmon as a visionary North Carolina corporate and community leader, the school is honoring him for being a long and generous benefactor and advocate for ethical and responsible communications.

Through CBC and the A.J. Fletcher Foundation, Goodmon has supported education of future journalists at UNC. His funding created the James F. Goodmon Studio, a state-of-the-art television studio housed in Carroll Hall, which CBC and WRAL-TV still support. And the CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship, which recently concluded its sixth year, is a joint venture to provide minority journalism college students from across the U.S. with hands-on learning during a 2-week long program. WRAL-TV staffers mentor the students to prepare them for a career in broadcasting.

The scope of his commitment to journalistic excellence is broad, from producing award-winning news and public affairs at CBC to fostering media and communications students and professionals, many at the UNC School of Media and Journalism, reads the announcement.
