ales and GeoFusion ready to fly an advanced interactive D moving map application in Q4 0

APEX 2013 Show, Anaheim, California 10 September 2013 - Thales, leader in In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity (IFEC), confirms that it will debut at APEX a new version of its highly successful moving map application which it plans to deliver later this year. Together with its partner GeoFusion, Inc., a 3D Earth visualization technology specialist, Thales adapted the proven application to its award winning TopSeries AVANT system.

Called 3DMaps, the new product leverages the system's Android and capacitive touch environment with full features including multi-touch gestures for zoom, rotate, pan and tilt capability. Used in concert with Thales's revolutionary handheld Touch Passenger Media Unit (TouchPMU), passengers are provided with the ability to multi-task so that they can watch a movie on the big seat screen and view the map on the 3.8 TouchPMU display at the same time. With the TouchPMU, users also have remote touch screen controls that allow navigation through the interactive map on the seat display via the handheld unit. Visually, the new map has a redesigned user interface, graphics and simulated cockpit and window views. There are higher resolution satellite imagery options for airline-selected cities down to 60cm per pixel. And, for maximum convenience, there are on-line ground tools that allow an airline to customize the look and feel as well as the place names database.

The 3DMaps application is a great example of what the Android platform brings to the market. The new features further improve the already amazing experience the original product has delivered said Stuart Dunleavy, VP of Connectivity and Media for Thales's In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity (IFEC).

Current commitments for the new product cover 422 aircraft with 12 airlines. Already installed on earlier generation TopSeries platforms (i-5000/i-8000), there are nearly 200 aircraft on six airlines presently flying 3DMaps. Today passengers are tracking the aircraft in motion as it flies over a high resolution 3D globe comprised of satellite imagery and terrain data including a stunning experience of tracking the aircraft in real time while in taxi, take-off, flight and landing phases. Passengers can also browse the globe independently from the aircraft position with control to zoom, tilt, pan and rotate the views. There are also pre-defined views such as cockpit, left and right window and continuously rotating views around the aircraft as it flies. Points of interest on the map can be selected to display additional information about the location. The application is suitable for overhead broadcast operation and can be scripted to show specific subject matters at pre-determined intervals and flight phases.
