Monitor options for the mobile-production market grew in the past year, in terms of both brands and models, underscoring the fact that, while the physics of the limited space available in trucks remains immutable, the range of what audio mixers aboard those trucks want to hear remains as diverse as ever. Here's a look at some notable new monitors.
Genelec SAM 8361
Genelec The enclosure for Genelec's 8000 and 8300 SAM (Smart Active Monitor) Series delivers a wide frequency response with superb imaging qualities. From the compact 8020D (bi-amp, 4-in. woofer) through the self-calibrating SAM 8361 (three-way coaxial), all models feature an entirely aluminum Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE) design with integrated Advanced Directivity Controlled Waveguide (DCW), with large internal volumes, curved edges, and high mechanical strength. www.genelec.com/
JBL The JBL 7 Series is available in four models: the install 705i and 708i and the powered 705P and 708P. They deliver exceptional output, stunning detail, an expansive soundstage, and impressive accuracy. To achieve this performance, the speakers deploy patent-pending driver technologies and the JBL Image Control Waveguide. All models integrate with the Intonato 24 Monitor Management Tuning System, which provides intuitive remote control and calibration. The monitors are equally at home in stereo, surround, and immersive-audio production rooms. www.jblpro.com/
Neumann The KH 120 studio monitor has a Mathematically Modeled Dispersion waveguide (MMD, flexible acoustical controls, analog Class AB amplifiers, a large headroom analog input, and an extensive mounting hardware range. www.neumann.com
Yamaha MSP3
Yamaha The MSP7 monitor has a 6.5-in.-cone woofer driven by an 80-W power amplifier. Tweeter has its own 50-W power amplifier for low-mid and high frequency ranges. Low-reflection diecast-magnesium basket maximizes mechanical precision while minimizing unwanted coloration. The 1-in. tweeters feature titanium dome, precise reproduction up to 40 kHz. Waveguide achieves uniform high-frequency dispersion of 120 degrees. The monitor features balanced XLR-type connectors for input.
A smaller solution is the MSP3, which features a 4-in. woofer and a 7/8-in. tweeter for a combined frequency response of 65 Hz-22 kHz. With its advanced waveguide, the MSP3 provides imaging and respectable low-end for its size. www.yamahaproaudio.com/
