GDC Tech among the first third-party manufacturers to adopt revolutionary new sound format San Francisco, August 29, 2013-Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) announced today that GDC Technology (GDC Tech), a world-leading digital cinema solutions provider, will be among the first third-party manufacturers licensed to incorporate Dolby Atmos playback into its servers. Dolbys new audio platform continues to receive widespread support from the cinema industry, including major studios, award-winning directors and sound teams, and now GDC Tech, bringing the power of Dolby Atmos to more audiences around the world.
By enabling Dolby Atmos playback in GDC servers, our customers can deliver a premium entertainment experience to their patrons and be at the forefront of innovation, said Pranay Kumar, Chief Technology Officer, GDC Tech.
Dolby Atmos was designed for interoperability, so third-party manufacturers like GDC Tech can enable a sound experience way beyond 5.1, 7.1, or 11.1 channels, said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema, Dolby Laboratories. We are very pleased with the support we are getting for Dolby Atmos from all corners of the industry. Together we will raise the bar on the cinema experience and make movie audiences feel as if they are in the movie, not just watching it.
A software update is expected to be made available this September for GDC Tech servers to enable Dolby Atmos playback. Once updated, the GDC server will be able to take Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers Digital Cinema Packages (SMPTE DCPs) containing Dolby Atmos soundtracks and play them back with the Dolby Atmos Cinema Processor CP850.
Exhibitors interested in the upgrade should contact GDC Tech or their local dealer. Current Dolby CP850 customers can get the software update by contacting GDC Tech.
