January 30, 2015
Thales continued to deploy its international development strategy in 2014, strengthening its positions in Europe and stepping up efforts to meet strong demand in emerging countries. Faced with rapid urban growth, these countries are investing heavily in new transportation infrastructure.
Thales is a global leader in IT-based critical transportation systems.
Key points
Thales positioned in four new countries
Excellent year in China for urban transportation
Development of Latin Americas metro networks
Success on Indias metro projects and positioning in mainline rail
Continuing modernisation of Europes mainline networks
Thales returns to Frances urban transportation market
Training local talent in Egypt and the UAE
Thales positioned in three new countriesThe year began in Japan, when Thales was selected by the East Japan Railway Company, known as JR East, to implement its SelTrac CBTC signalling system for the Joban line in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. With this contract, Thales became the first non-Japanese company to enter the Japanese signalling market.
In Central Asia, Thales won its first transportation contract in Azerbaijan and will upgrade signalling, supervision and telecommunication systems for the Baku metro (Phase 1 of the Purple Line).
In the mainline rail segment, Thales also won its first transportation contract in Nigeria where it will provide an integrated signalling and telecommunication solution for the future 330 km line between the Itakpe industrial district and one of the countrys major seaports at Warri.
Excellent year in China for urban transportationIn China, Thaless local joint venture Thales SAIC Transportation System won six metro signalling contracts in 2014. The company will deliver the SelTrac CBTC solution for the Hefei, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Shanghai metro systems. In Guangzhou, the contract for Lines 14 and 21, which together run for 138 km, is the longest mileage ever included in one bid in Chinas urban rail transportation market. Thales SAIC was also awarded a contract to supply the SelTrac system for the Nanjing airport rail link, which entered service ahead of the Youth Olympic Games in August 2014.
Development of Latin Americas metro networksThaless contribution to the development of public transportation in Latin America continued in 2014. In Brazil, Thales was selected to provide its CBTC solution for two lines of the future Salvador metro and telecommunication systems for Line 17 of the S o Paulo metro.
In Chile, Thales won a new contract with the Santiago metro to supply an operational control centre for two lines and migrate the SCADA energy management system to improve energy efficiency across the network.
In Mexico, Thales has been selected to deploy its ETCS Level 2 signalling technology on the suburban railway between Mexico City and Toluca, the fifth largest city.
Success on Indias metro projects and positioning in mainline railIn India, Thales was chosen for Phase 3 of the Delhi metro expansion, which includes 79 new stations and over 100 km of new line. It will provide a complete fare collection system, including 900 access control gates. Thales will also supply the fare collection system for Phase 2 of the Gurgaon rapid metrorail, which is linked to the Delhi metro. In the mainline rail segment, Thales won its first ETCS Level 1 contract in India to upgrade the Basin Bridge-Arakkonam section of Indias Southern Railway in the first stage in a major modernisation programme by the Indian operator.
Continuing modernisation of Europes mainline networksIn Spain, Thales won two contracts in partnership with Siemens to install signalling, supervision and telecommunication systems for more than 500 km of track on the Antequera-Granada line and the Olmedo-Ourense line as part of an ongoing programme to improve the countrys high-speed rail network. In Greece, Thales won a signalling and telecommunication contract as part of improvements to the Kiato-Rododafni section of the line that links Patras to Athens. In Poland, Thales won a contract with PKP Polish Lines S.A. to implement its signalling and telecommunication solution on two sections of the Warszawa- d line. In the United Kingdom, Network Rail launched a major programme to upgrade its mainline traffic management system, with 12 regional operating centres. Thales was selected to provide its NetTrac Aramis solution for the first two of these centres at Romford and Cardiff.
Thales won several mainline maintenance and signalling contracts in Portugal (REFER), Spain (ADIF) and Turkey (TCDD). In the fair collection segment, Thales was chosen by Dutch rail operator NS to provide maintenance for more than 1,000 access control gates.
Thaless mainline rail business was also driven by key contracts to supply LockTrac electronic interlocking systems in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Norway.
Thales returns to Frances urban transportation market In 2014, Thales booked several fare collection and security contracts in France. In December, the Bordeaux Urban Community selected Thales to replace its existing systems with a high-performance contactless, multimodal and interoperable revenue collection system. In the Paris region, Thales will equip a further 1,000 buses and trams with its new onboard videoprotection solution. In total, over 6,500 Thales videoprotection systems are in service on the Paris suburban rail network, bus lines and tram network in France. Finally, the SNCF partnered with Thales to replace Vitry-sur-Seine's signal control centre with an electronic interlocking solution that ensures an optimal level of security whilst increasing the number of trains in circulation.
