In fact, nearly half of Mexicans think their lives are dramatic enough to be a novela - qu drama!
January 20, 2022 - Want to leave the drama behind in the New Year? Not so fast. In a recent survey conducted by Netflix in Mexico, 71% of respondents said the more drama the better(1). That is, so long as it's on-screen.
Drama was among the top three genres Mexicans said they would pick if they could only watch one genre for the rest of their lives(1). And nothing brings drama quite like a novela or una novela N con Netflix.
Whether you love them, love to hate them or hate to love them, one thing's for sure, we can't stop watching them on Netflix- Rebelde has been in Mexico's top 10 since launch(2) and Yo soy Betty, la fea was one of the most popular shows in Mexico in 2021(2). And when we watch novelas, we do it at our own pace - the majority of Mexicans prefer their drama multiple episodes at a time (1A) and they own it - 84% of Mexicans said they are proud to watch novelas (1).
For these fans (1B) , it's all about the emotion, like the heartache and passion in Caf con aroma de mujer; the acting, like the compelling and personable performances in Madre Solo hay Dos; and of course, the drama, like the wild ride that is Oscuro deseo. And drama loves company. When asked their preferred way to watch a novela, the top two responses in Mexico were with a partner and with my family (1). Nothing brings us together quite like revenge, forbidden romance, epic slaps and the unexpected plot twists only a novela can provide.
We're not always that innocent, though. Villains, like C sar Lazcano, Esteban Solares and Sim n Marroqu n, are resoundingly our favorite novela characters (coming in more than twice as much as our love for the good guy/girl) (1C). More so, almost half of Mexicans surveyed think their life is crazy enough to be turned into a novela (1). Dios m o! While some may think that's crazy, there's a lot to be learned from novelas. Ready for more? From Oscuro Deseo (launching February 2) to Ritmo Salvaje, P lpito and Donde Hubo Fuego, there are plenty of novelas just around the corner, ones that bring together the best of series and the best of novelas to create stories that feel new, yet familiar and still start with an N (for Netflix).
Methodology: (1) The survey was conducted by Netquest between November 2021 and January 2022 and based on 1,000 responses. The sample is representative of an adult online population in Mexico. (1A) When asked their preferred way to watch on-screen drama, 84% of respondents in Mexico said a few or all episodes at a time. (1B) When asked the best part of a novela, the top three responses in Mexico were the drama (62%), the emotion (60%) and the acting (51%).
