MAXIS SPREADS CHRISTMAS CHEER TO 50 SPECIAL GUESTS FROM CHARITY HOMES

The spirit of the year end festive season was brought to life for more than 50 guests from three charity homes in Sabah, when Maxis Berhad (Maxis) spread Christmas cheer to residents from Jireh Home, Tolumis Care Centre (for the disabled) and Montfort Boys Home at Sutera Harbour Resort in Kota Kinabalu today. This is the second time that Maxis is organising this initiative since its introduction in 2011. At the event, Maxis also presented a total of RM30,000 to the homes comprising children, adults and caregivers who also participated in games and activities while enjoying a sumptuous spread of Christmas treats.

The event was attended by Maxis Joint Chief Operating Officers, Mark Dioguardi and Suren J. Amarasekera; Maxis Head of Sabah Region, Anthony Ho; and other members of Maxis senior management and volunteers, all of whom spent time with the guests.

We are extremely delighted to engage with communities in Sabah for the second year running. At Maxis, we have always been committed to giving back to the community which is very close to our hearts and is an essential part of our companys DNA. It is there a pleasure for us today to be able to take some time off to spend with our guests from these three homes. We hope that we are able to bring some joy into their lives with todays event and also to assist in the running of the homes with our humble contribution, said Anthony.

During the event, Mark and Suren presented cheques of RM10,000 each to the three homes, and together with the other Maxis senior leadership team members, distributed Christmas goodie bags to everyone. Each home also put up stage performances at the event.

Maxis has also been actively involved in other charitable causes in Sabah, including sponsoring the 12th Sutera Harbour 7km Sunset Charity Run 2012 to raise funds for Sabahs Special Olympics Team and the Sabah Thalassemia Society. This is the third year that Maxis is sponsoring the event.

Aside from community events such as today, Maxis has also established programmes which contribute to the community and support national aspirations in the areas of technology, education and youth development. One such programme is its flagship Maxis Cyberkids, which is aimed at harnessing leading-edge technology and innovation to spread ICT knowledge amongst students in support of the Governments call to bridge the digital divide in the country. Since its inception in 2002, the Maxis Cyberkids Camp has reached out to over 8,500 students and teachers across 1,500 schools in Malaysia. At the Maxis Cyberkids National Challenge 2012, which is part of the Programme framework, two schools from East Malaysia, SMK St Michael, Sandakan, Sabah and SMK Belaga Sarawak, emerged as the national winners. Maxis had also completed camps for students from these two schools in 2012.

This year, the Maxis Cyberkids programme is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and in conjunction with this milestone, Maxis is working together with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to take its Cyberkids programme to special needs schools. With the approval from MOE, Maxis has already completed its pilot camp for Sekolah Kebangsaan Pendidikan Khas Selangor (SKPKS), a special education school for the hearing-impaired.

Additionally, Maxis is the first to award scholarships to children of its postpaid customers as part of its Scholarship for Excellence programme. Since the inception of the programme in 2005, Maxis has invested over RM37.9 million in this initiative and has endowed scholarships to 177 undergraduate and 32 postgraduate Malaysian students.
