Meitingen site of SGL Carbon celebrates 100th anniversary

It all started with electric street lighting in Berlin, as well as electrically conductive components for electric trains and the melting of steel - the industrialization of the then still young material carbon developed rapidly at the end of the 18th century. As early as the beginning of the 1920s, the Siemens brothers then established the production site for graphite components in Meitingen. On July 1, 1922, the plant of todays SGL Carbon went into operation in Meitingen.

Today, Saturday, June 25, 2022, the company looked back on its impressive history together with its employees, retirees and selected guests in an anniversary celebration.

Voices on the 100th anniversaryThomas Dippold, CFO of SGL Carbon: In the 100 years since it was founded, our site in Meitingen has developed enormously. With around 1,400 colleagues, Meitingen is still SGL Carbons largest site worldwide, and the only one where all four Business Areas are represented. Materials and products manufactured here go to customers all over the world and find their way into markets that are shaping our future, be it electromobility, wind energy or the use of hydrogen as a propulsion system. On behalf of the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board of SGL Carbon SE, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all my colleagues in Meitingen and all the retirees for their dedication and commitment to advancing this site and thus our SGL Carbon.

R diger Krieger, Site Manager of SGL Carbon in Meitingen: Today, we can look back with pride on our development and traditions of the last 100 years. But we also need to continue shaping the future. By improving existing products, our infrastructure and services, driving forward the energy transition through the use of renewable energies, creating new synergies with industrial partners and, of course, with new innovations. SGL was, is and will remain an extremely exciting company with employees who have made and continue to make all of this possible with great dedication and commitment.

Thomas Wienhues, Managing Director at Brembo SGL Carbon Ceramic Brakes, SGL Carbons joint venture with Brembo at the Meitingen site: Carbon ceramic brakes can also look back on what is now a very eventful 25-year history. We are very grateful to SGL Carbon for having correctly assessed the potential of carbon ceramics at the time and for having found the right partner for further development and marketing in Brembo. Both partners have complementary skills and a great workforce, of which I am very proud.
