On Friday 18 July, which is Nelson Mandelas birthday and Nelson Mandela International Day as declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), South Africa will honour the life and legacy of a historic icon. In celebration of Mandela Day, The History Channel (DStv channel 186) will present a candid and inspiring documentary, Nelson Mandela: Redrawn, which takes audiences inside the life of the man that fathered the Rainbow Nation. The film will feature on the channel at 20h30.

The personal accounts of Charlize Theron, Bono, Ian McKellen, Bill Cosby, Jeremy Thompson, Larry Kind and Richard Branson are featured in the film, along with Madiba s story which unfolds in reverse, from the last phase of his life to his rural childhood. Using animation and footage from around the globe, lost events are recreated and humble moments are shared in an intimate portrayal of South Africa s most famous leader.

The documentary also ventures beyond the media hype, revealing a political genius who was able to transform a country from behind bars, manipulate the press and inspire both politicians and celebrities.

In addition to Nelson Mandela: Redrawn, a series featuring comedian Eddie Izzard titled Eddie Izzard s Mandela Marathons will air on 18 July at 19h40. The show sees Izzard attempting to run 27 marathons in 27 consecutive days across South Africa as a tribute to Mandela s 27 years spent in prison. As he travels South Africa, Izzard tells Mandela s story through visits to the people and places which touched and impacted him.

Mandela s World Cup, which broadcasts on 18 July at 22h10, explores Mandela s influence in bringing the Fifa Soccer World Cup to South Africa in 2010. Not only does this brand new documentary uncover how the tournament came to symbolise Africa s re-emergence as a place of prosperity and growth, but it also highlights the optimism and opportunity which Mandela envisaged for the continent.
