XL Axiata Is the First Service Provider in Asia Pacific and Japan to Implement Cisco Technologies to Transform Mobile Service Delivery in Indonesia

Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain and Jakarta, Indonesia - March 2, 2015 - XL Axiata, one of the largest cellular operators in Indonesia for consumer and machine-to-machine (M2M) services, has selected Cisco Virtualized Packet Core to deliver the network elasticity and service agility needed to support the rapid growth and ever-changing demands of todays market. By implementing Cisco Virtualized Packet Core (VPC), XL Axiata has become the first to implement the Cisco solution in Asia Pacific and Japan.

The recent Cisco Mobile Visual Networking Index (2014-2019) predicts that mobile data traffic in Indonesia will grow 10-fold from 2014 to 2019, reaching 609.5 petabytes per month by 2019. Added to XL Axiatas 136 percent year-over-year mobile traffic growth, XL Axiata needed the ability to have a flexible mobile core as well as support for their growing cellular M2M customer base.

After rigorous testing, XL Axiata added Cisco VPC onto its live network, and the solution carried customer traffic with complete reliability, scalability, and quality. The Cisco VPC, coupled with Cisco Evolved Services Platform (ESP), enabled XL Axiata to turn up new services in minutes and easily scale operations.

Ciscos VPC is the industrys first hardware platform and hypervisor-independent solution that combines Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) allowing service providers, such as XL Axiata, to deploy new services and reduce operational expenditures, while keeping their existing Cisco ASR 5000 Series investments and continuing to scale them for consumer and enterprise services.

With more than 60 million subscribers, XL Axiata is one of Indonesias leading cellular service providers, offering various types of telecommunication products and services such as voice, SMS, data, and other value-added mobile telecommunication services with an extensive network around the country.

XL Axiata tested Ciscos Unified Computing System (UCS) servers as a compute platform to deploy Cisco VPC and Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). Cisco VPC is the industrys most complete, fully virtualized evolved packet core that scales up and down to support a full range of mobile networks, including new markets such as M2M, mobile virtual network operators (MVNO), and Premium Mobile Broadband Networks. Cisco VPC combines all packet core services-for 4G, 3G, 2G, Wi-Fi, and small cell networks-into a single solution. It provides those network functions as virtualized services, and enables customers to scale capacity and introduce new services much faster and more cost-effectively.

XL Axiata reported 136 percent year-on-year data traffic growth, with subscribers reaching 31.2 million users or 53 percent of their total customer base. XL Axiata has seen strong growth in their data smartphone users with 25 percent smartphone penetration of their total customer base, reaching 14.6 million users as of September 2014. The Cisco VPC supplies XL Axiata with the same Cisco StarOS software used in their network today, with the addition of scalable capacity enabled by virtualization needed to support their fast growing voice, video, and data and M2M customer requirements.
