NAB Show 2016: R&S CLIPSTER Gen 6 with innovative features for post production workflows 08 April 2016
The R&S CLIPSTER has established itself as the complete mastering and deliverable solution for premium content. At NAB, the next generation of the R&S CLIPSTER mastering station will introduce improvements in flexibility, quality and performance to help service providers expand their portfolio, including support for Dolby Vision workflows. An enhanced feature set in the R&S CLIPSTER Gen 6 takes image processing and codec acceleration to the next level enabling high-end post production workflows that include 4K UHD, HFR and Rec. 2020.
Hanover, April 7, 2016 At NAB, the R&S CLIPSTER Gen 6 mastering station, which made its debut at IBC 2015, will introduce new functionalities to boost DCI and IMF (Interoperable Master Format) mastering. Moreover, with its added improvements in flexibility, quality and performance, the R&S CLIPSTER will help service providers expand their portfolio. Since its introduction in 2003, the award-winning R&S CLIPSTER has established itself as the complete mastering and deliverable solution for premium content.
Content creators now benefit from increased performance: The innovative high-precision color processing engine expands the range of color formats and offers on-the-fly color transformations between standardized color spaces and even customized color formats. In combination with extended IMF J2K profiles for high dynamic range (HDR), the R&S CLIPSTER provides higher resolutions, frame rates and bit depth compared with the previous generation.
Rohde & Schwarz DVS has collaborated with Dolby on an HDR mastering solution combining Dolby Vision and IMF. Dolby Vision combines two powerful capabilities high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut resulting in astonishing images that, compared to standard pictures, deliver brighter highlights, more light-to-dark contrast, and colors never before seen on TV. The R&S CLIPSTER Gen 6 as currently slated will enable Dolby Vision mastering, allowing the Dolby Vision metadata to be directly synchronized to the timeline clip and wrapped into MXF. The R&S CLIPSTER would also make it possible to output Dolby Vision metadata via serial digital interface (SDI) to the Dolby Vision content mapping unit (CMU), which can map the content to a target display like HDR-10 or Rec709, making the R&S CLIPSTER an optimal solution for QC playback and screening of Dolby Vision workflows. The Dolby Vision features of R&S CLIPSTER Gen 6 are intended to be available to participants in the Dolby Vision pilot program.
The R&S CLIPSTER Gen 6 has also increased its performance by offering I/O up to 4K 120 p as well as 4K encoding at 60 p. The mastering station also offers a complete IMF workflow from a single solution: timeline marker authoring, captions, subtitles and forensic watermarking. The mastering station now even supports the IMSC1 profile, which is used to simplify subtitle delivery. By implementing IMF in their workflows, content providers benefit from the flexibility of file-based workflows combined with the reliability of tape-based production.
From the entry-level solution for quality control (QC) up to a full-featured R&S CLIPSTER, users will find a configuration to suit their needs. They can start with a version for QC playback, progress to an IMF version, and make the final step to a complete R&S CLIPSTER mastering station as needed.
Stephen Birdsong, Product Manager for Post Production Solutions at Rohde & Schwarz DVS: "We have really worked hard on making CLIPSTER what it is today: the gold standard for DCI and IMF mastering. We are delighted that our mastering station is a platform used by post production facilities all over the world. If content is made by CLIPSTER, this content can be exchanged with great confidence."
