GoPro Design Team Awarded Red Dot Best of the Best for Karma

Recently, the GoPro design team was bestowed a Best of the Best Award in Product Design for the Karma drone, and we could not be more proud. When GoPro set out to create the ultimate GoPro accessory, ease of use and portabiity were paramount.

For years, GoPro cameras have enabled people to capture memorable moments in a unique perspective, and Karma was designed to take the camera even further, with cinematic precision and stability. As well, Karma needed to perform well with simple and intuitive interaction, and be as convenient as possible. In short, form and function had to marry beautifully.

Today, the Karma drone is taking GoPro cameras to new heights and vantage points, capturing precious moments from an astounding point of view, and looking good while doing so. And its much more than a drone. In fact, Karma is a complete video stabilization system, in the air and on the ground. Seamlessly, the stabilizing gimbal that holds the GoPro camera can be removed from the drone and fitted to a handheld grip for cinematic footage in the palm of your hand. Yes, Karma is a drone, but it is much more than that.

Statement by the jury

The design of GoPro Karma is astounding for the fact that all elements of the system are perfectly matched in terms of form and function. This has lent it an aesthetically pleasing and highly continuous appearance. Moreover, it has also emerged as a unified system with a functionality that allows sounding out the possibilities of drones. Easy-to-handle and user-oriented, it not only facilitates recording aerial images but also integrates a handheld and easily mountable gimbal solution.

About the Red Dot Award

The origins of the Red Dot Design Award date back to 1955. The institution behind the competition is the Design Zentrum NRW, which is led by Professor Dr. Peter Zec since 1991. Its distinction, the Red Dot, is established internationally as one of the most sought-after quality marks for good design. In order to assess the diversity in the field of design in a thorough and professional manner, the award breaks down into three diciplines: the Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept - each award is organised once a year. From products to communication projects and packaging to design concepts and prototypes, the Red Dot Award tracks the most prominent trends worldwide.
