Win a trip to London with the omson Foundation FPA award

Journalists aged 30 and under who are working in the developing world have a potentially career-changing opportunity to enter the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award - and the deadline for entries - 18 September - is approaching fast.

Three selected finalists will be flown to London, spend two nights in the city and attend the Foreign Press Association (FPA) gala award night at the Sheraton Park Hotel on Tuesday 19 November along with leading figures from the world of journalism.

The evening will provide an excellent opportunity for the finalists to network with the other FPA- award nominees comprising world-class journalists working in the UK and overseas. UK and international media organisations will also be well represented at the event.

Award criteria The Thomson Foundation "Young Journalist from the Developing World" award is a new category at the prestigious UK FPA Awards. Entrants will be judged on the impact their stories have had on public debate in their country.

Journalists aged 30 or under on the closing date working in countries with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of less than $20,000 are eligible for the Thomson Foundation award. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 18 September.

The response so far has been excellent with entries from countries across the world, ranging from Bangladesh and Brazil to China and Cameroon.

FPA awards history The FPA in London was founded in 1888 by 19 representatives of the French press as a special authorised society and became a model for many others around the world.

Politically non-aligned, the FPA is one of the oldest clubs for foreign correspondents in the world.

The FPA awards have run in their current format every year since 2000.

Previous winners include The Guardian's Nick Davies, who won FPA journalist of the year for his investigations into phone hacking, and the late Marie Colvin of the Sunday Times for her reporting in Afghanistan in 2010.

The awards also recognise excellence in broadcasting with recent winners including the Horror in Homs film for Channel 4 News and Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark, a documentary for Al Jazeera.
