The Zanzibar International Film Festival is proud to host a series of events focused on South Africa that will include a range of South African guests including South African actress Leleti Khumalo, along with filmmakers Lebobang Rasethaba, Director and Tshego Molete Producer: Prisoner 467/64: The Untold Legacy of Andrew Mhalangeni, Adnani Steirn Director: 21 Icons: A Journey to Democracy and Sihle Hlope Director: As I Am.
The festival kicks off on July 18th with SELMA, a fitting tribute to Nelson Mandela on his birthday. The next few days will see various South African films being screened as well as a public forum on Pan-Africanism.
On July 19th, South Africa Day at ZIFF, the powerful documentaries Miners Shot Down and City of Violence will be screened at ZIFF. This screening of Miners Shot Down will be taking place shortly after the release of the Farlam Commission report into the death of the thirty-four miners killed in Marikana on Aug 16th 2012.
This powerful film from Rehad Desai is essential viewing for anyone concerned about preserving the basic democratic rights of citizens whether it is in South Africa, across the African continent or beyond.
Jerome Salle's City of Violence, is one of the South African films competing in competition and is a crime thriller based on the book by Caryl Ferey. This French and South African co-production starring Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom is an intrinsically South African film that was selected to close off the 2013 International Cannes Film Festival .
On the 19th- 20th ZIFF will be screening two episodes from Danny Schechter's Beyond the Long Walk series. Schechter passed away earlier this year, but these films are a tribute to his passionate mastery of documentary filmmaking. The Beyond the Long Walk series is a behind-the-scenes view of the making of the film.
On the evening of July 19th, Leleti Khumalo will introduce a special screening of the classic film, Sarafina, followed by her also hosting a screening of Yesterday in one of the nearby villages as part of ZIFF's Women's Panorama outreach.
ZIFF is also proud to present a public forum on Pan-Africansim on Wednesday July 22nd hosted by The Lab Community, a group of artists, development practitioners and scholars whose objective is to support community development based in the principles and values of equality, justice, caring, acceptance, non-violence, sustainability and cooperation.
Below listed are the other five South African films nominated from the horn of Africa:
21 Icons - A Journey to Democracy, Adrian Steirn: The documentary shares the story of South
Africa's turbulent past, the apartheid years and reflects the spirit of the nation and the promise of the future.
Prisoner 467/64: The Untold Legacy of Andrew Mlangeni, Lebogang Rasethaba: This
documentary, looks at the life of African National Congress stalwart Andrew Mlangeni, who spent 26 years in the cell next to Madiba, yet rarely receives attention.
As I Am, Sihle Hlope: The story of a soft, sensitive man who has to learn to assert himself
when his chauvinistic younger brother tries to hijack their father's funeral arrangements.
Routine, P Sam Kessie: An enigmatic single mother from Ghana, and her twelve year old
daughter, are part of a reality cooking show whose objective is to reunite dysfunctional families by making meals together.
