Five years after the release of his Feature Length Documentary The Manuscripts of Timbuktu, Writer, Director, Producer Zola Maseko, is gearing up for his second South African Feature Film The Whale Caller' coming ten years after his acclaimed feature directorial debut, Drum'.
The Whale Caller is a book adaption by renowned South African author, Zakes Mda. The script, penned by Mda is a poingnat and dramatic, magical realism love story that tells the tale of the seaside village of Hermanus overrun by whale-watchers and foreign tourists determined to see whales in their natural habitat. But when the tourists have gone home, the whale caller lingers at the shoreline, wooing a whale he has named Sharisha with cries from a kelp horn. Enter Salumi the town drunk who wears a silk dress and red stiletto heels, infatuated with him! An examination of the fragility of love, but more importantly the fragility of life itself when one surrenders wholly to the foolish heart.
With finance completed and signed at the Durban International Film Festival, The Whale Caller is set to begin principal photography in Hermanus, Western Cape at the end of August with talented Producer, Dylan Voogt from Stage 5 Films, at the helm.
This is Voogt's second feature film this year, having recently completed Production Services on the period (1960's) Noem my Skollie with Producers David Max Brown and Moshidi Motshegwa.
The Whale Caller is supported by IDC, NFVF as well as the DTI and underwritten by film guarantors, Hollard Insurance.
