Members of the Writers Guild of America walk a picket line outside of Warner Bros. in New York on July 13, 2023. Actors were poised to go on strike July 13, joining writers in the first industry-wide shutdown in 63 years after last-ditch talks failed, with nearly all film and television production likely to grind to a halt. SAG-AFTRA, which represents 160,000 performers including A-list stars, said negotiations late July 12 had ended without a deal. (Photo by TIMOTHY A. CLARY / AFP)
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced on Sunday that they are currently in negotiations to end the Hollywood writer's strike. The 146-day strike made headlines as thousands of Hollywood writers asked for better working contracts, along with the support of many celebrities. With the negotiations underway, it's good news for streaming platform fans, as many shows and movies are reported to return. We take a look at the timeline that shows and movies may return to screens.

While Hollywood writers strike a deal with most studios, there are many media reports that state it's likely that some television and streaming shows will return soon. The timing for the return however will depend on certain factors, such as the negotiations, the platforms, and the production time for shows.

When will your favourite show return after the Hollywood Writers strike? According to Deadline, daytime shows are likely to see their return first. Once writers receive notification from the WGA, they will resume production. Shows such as The Drew Barrymore Show, Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon which all stopped production during the strike may return to work, however, this is yet to be confirmed by the hosts. If production does begin, daytime shows could see a return as soon as October.

The return of scripted shows Many fans have been waiting for the return of scripted shows, such as Stranger Things and Abbot Elementary . The good news is the strike will see many of the writers returning to work. Unfortunately according to Reuters however, these shows are likely to take longer to return to streaming platforms due to the ongoing Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike.

Movies will likely push production The strike resulted in many release delays for movies such as Deadpool 3 and Superman: Legacy. Once the contract is finalised, Hollywood staff will likely work towards pushing these movies to prevent further delays. Although the WGA reached an agreement on Sunday, they are yet to disclose details about the deal but made it clear that all members cannot start work until the contract is finalised.

The Hollywood writers' strike makes history The writers' strike which began on May 2nd made history as the second-longest strike in Hollywood. The longest 1988 strike in Hollywood lasted 154 days. The SAG-AFTRA strike represents actors in the industry who went on strike just after the WGA. The tentative contract being finalised by the WGA should pave the way for the SAG-AFTRA to reach negotiations for their actors, but the timeline for actors to return to work is yet to be confirmed. We can only hope that the negotiations end well for all parties involved and we see the return of our favourite shows and movies soon!
