Litepanels Brightens Up the Jungle for Will Nicholls

For 20-year-old photographer and filmmaker Will Nicholls, shooting a documentary in the heart of the Peruvian rainforest isn't the easiest task to accomplish. To accurately capture the rainforest's regenerating areas and biodiversity, Nicholls needed equipment that would not only last throughout his two-month trip, but would also provide ideal, high-quality images.

For his documentary, Nicholls explains the importance of precise lighting, In a forest environment, colors are important, but there's such little light to begin with that it's hard to get the correct colors reflected in your shot. Since the scene is so green, you need to make sure that the lighting is exactly right otherwise everything looks a bit strange.

In a location where portability is key and power is limited, Nicholls chose to utilize Litepanels ASTRA 1x1 Bi-Color to achieve optimal color temperature for his production. The panel's convenient adjustability between daylight and tungsten lighting allowed him to effectively alter the white balance of the shot to reflect both indoor and outdoor day or night lighting during his trip.

Nicholls also relied on the ASTRA's ultra-smooth dimming from 0-100% to get rid of shadows, It's helpful that the ASTRA panel can go from extremely bright to extremely dim, and even at a dim setting it can still be really effective for filling in shadow. You can't tell the light is on, but you can still see the difference in the shot, which is exactly what you want.

Since Nicholls was working in an extremely humid rainforest, equipment breaking down due to the harsh environment was a reasonable concern. Thankfully, Nicholls found that the ASTRA's thermal management system was particularly useful since he didn't have to worry about the panel's longevity, It's challenging to find equipment that would survive in the heat of the jungle, but ASTRA's internal fan allowed it to maintain its performance throughout the day. For what I was trying to achieve, Litepanels was perfect.
