We've had Grey's Anatomy, Chicago Med, Private Practice and now, This Is Going To Hurt. Emmy-winning actor Ben Whishaw plays real-life doctor Adam Kay in the comedy-drama series, who has detailed his experiences in the operating room in a bestselling memoir.

THIS IS GOING TO HURT' This Is Going To Hurt is a comedy-drama series based on the best-selling memoir by doctor Adam Kay. In the book, the doctor details his hospital life with his chaotic job in obstetrics and gynaecology. Kay described Ben Whishaw's performance in This Is Going To Hurt as a career-defining performance .
The actors in the seven-part series received basic medical training from medical advisors while hospital staff played the extras.

No corners are cut on the medical side of things, explained Ambika Mod who plays Shrut, a junior doctor.
We really learned how to do a caesarean; we really learned how to do a forceps procedure; we really learned how to do all that stuff. It's as true to life as we could have made it.
A LOT OF HUMOUR' Ben Whishaw explained that This Is Going To Hurt is drawn from real-life situations that happened to Adam Kay.
A lot of the jokes are Adam's way of coping, I suppose with the pressures of being a doctor.

A sitcom could never speak to the urgency and tragedy of life on the wards, nor could a straight drama convey the funny and ridiculous situations that pepper every doctor's day, Adam Kay.
You can have a hilarious moment in an antenatal clinic that you know you'll be recounting in pubs for yours and two minutes later you're telling a patient you can't find their baby's heartbeat it's a job of contrasts and constant gear-shift.

CRITICS WEIGH IN This Is Going To Hurt has received a 95% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been named the eighth best-reviewed series of 2022 by MetaCritic.
Time Magazine hailed the series as the best medical drama in years .
