Hybrid Media Storage: Work Local, Share Global
Object Matrix believes that the future of storage doesn't exclusively lie on-prem nor in the cloud, but far rather in a mix of the two. You should be able to keep your assets where you need and use them, but you should also be able share those assets around the world and take advantage of cloud DR. Cloud is here to stay, and rightfully so. It is brilliant at data distribution and therefore at shared production workflows. It can be very cost effective in these situations. Some very interesting software is also becoming available in the cloud paradigm. But, hold the horses, the reality today is that on-prem gives the greatest bandwidth possible, zero egress fees and can be significantly less expensive for many other workflows. On-prem also links with all those software apps that you've invested into and are already feature rich. Meanwhile, cloud creates more than a few single-vendor and security concerns and an unpredictable cost model. So which way to go?
Step in Hybrid. Hybrid workflows open up on-prem through to the cloud and back. Given hybrid provides the potential of the best of both worlds, is there a software manufacturer or indeed a customer out there that can ignore the need for hybrid solutions? Only the ones with their heads in the sand.
What is a Hybrid Storage Cloud?
If you need to work with HD, 4K and 8K, you require on-prem solutions for throughput, access times and audit. Elasticity of transformation and collaboration are often more suited to public cloud platforms.
A hybrid storage cloud mixes on-prem private cloud and third-party public cloud services together with the orchestration of content between the two platforms. It's key that the solution removes all the data management headache whilst providing clear insight into the assets you have and where you have them. Furthermore, it's key that it keeps metadata moving with the assets and is completely vendor and service agnostic. Lastly, if AI can help to get the data where you need it, when you need it that's a bonus, but one that will be expected in the future.
So in short, it could be that you are just looking for disaster recover or a full work local, share global workflow, but regardless, your investments should be into a future looking platform and the future lies in hybrid storage platforms.
