InfoComm International , the leading professional audiovisual trade association, presented its Young AV Professionals Award to Derrick Lund, CTS-D , of the Seattle Children's Hospital and Justin Kennington of Crestron. The awards were presented at InfoComm 2014, the top annual commercial audiovisual trade show taking place June 14-20 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Young AV Award was created by InfoComm to recognize up-and-coming professionals in the audiovisual industry. These award winners are held in the highest esteem by their AV industry colleagues of all ages.
With more than seventeen years of industry experience, AV Telemedicine Systems Architect Derrick Lund played a critical part in the implementation of the AV/ Telemedicine solutions for Seattle Children Hospital's doctors and patients, which now has become a corner stone of medical care in Seattle. Lund led the way in the implementation, configuration, and installation of over seven new conference rooms. Lund has built multiple different things in the hospital from a state of the art auditorium and high tech conference rooms, to patient observation rooms.
In 2011, Lund upgraded the Childrens Auditorium with a state-of-the-art broadcasting room, as well multiple remote controlled HD cameras. The project was completed using only in-house staff with no interruption to scheduled events. This unique installation has been highlighted in multiple magazines. Lund earned his CTS-D in 2012, when he began a new in-house operations model of the design, installation and management at the hospital. This allowed the hospital savings of tens of thousands of dollars, allowing funds to be diverted and used for improving patient care.
Lund oversaw all AV in Seattle Childrens new expansion in 2012-2013. Building Hope included 80 new patient rooms, 14 new conference rooms, remote patient monitoring systems and a new ER that includes an HD video recording system used for staff training. More than 300 LCD video displays were installed in the new 330,000 square foot building. Lund has specified, designed and installed over 200 AV/telemedicine systems at the main hospital, research buildings and multiple satellite clinics throughout Washington, Alaska and Montana.
Through his diligent documentation practice during installations, Lund has established a mandatory training program for his team with emphasis on the CTS certification. He is also a strong believer of on the job training and has served as a mentor for many teammates, as well as interns, from the Year Up program which connects urban young adults with job training opportunities. Some interns have earned full time positions on the Seattle Childrens AV Team.
Justin Kennington, Technology Manager at Crestron, has spent ten years in the industry with experience in hardware engineering. Prior to Crestron, Kennington was an engineer in the Platforms Group at Google for four years, designing and building the computers that drive the data centers, which run the Google search engine and company infrastructure. Kennington has contributed to dozens of patent applications in the fields of computer circuitry, software, and oil exploration equipment.
Kennington's abilities are evident in Crestron's DigitalMedia, which he developed. DigitalMedia began as a set of technologies, and then became one of the most successful, and influential product lines in the industry. While developing DigitalMedia, Kennington and a team of engineers worked together, to develop the technology that would become HDBase, which was the foundation of DigitalMedia. Justin then added several layers of technology on top of the platform, including advanced EDID management, CEC management, and fast switching technologies such as (Auto-Locking , QuickSwitch HD , and Insta-Switch ) - to make Crestron DigitalMedia.
With new technologies, industry professionals needed to learn how to design systems, install them, or troubleshoot them. Dozens of clients needed and demanded a way to transmit and distribute HD and HDCP protected content. Kennington and his team of engineers trained and aided in the design and installation process. With Kennington's guidance and direction, Crestron developed a standard and a certification program for DigitalMedia. Today, there are tens of thousands of DigitalMedia Certified professionals. Crestron DigitalMedia has sold more than $1 billion worldwide.
Today, Kennington is developing the next set of technologies for distributing 4K and streaming content.
Derrick Lund and Justin Kennington represent the future of the AV industry and are deserving recipients of the InfoComm Young AV Professionals Award, said David Labuskes, CTS, RCDD, Executive Director and CEO, InfoComm International. Each has embraced the spirit of innovation and has demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence.
