Pratap Subrahmanyam Named VMware Fellow

Pratap Subrahmanyam Named VMware Fellow VMware to Grant an Additional $800,000 Endowment to Computer Science Education PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug. 14, 2013 VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced the appointment of Pratap Subrahmanyam as a VMware Fellow. VMware Fellows represent the highest level of technical achievement within the company and are selected for their technical leadership and outstanding contributions to the company and the industry.

As a new VMware Fellow, Subrahmanyam is being honored by VMware with an endowment in his name of $800,000 to Stanford University, a university that he credits for helping shape VMwares culture and technology.

Pratap is a talented engineer who has been an invaluable contributor to VMware for the more than 13 years, said Ray OFarrell, senior vice president of R&D, VMware. His expertise and leadership continue to benefit VMware as we work to provide the best cloud and virtualization software and services to our customers. Pratap is an amazing technologist and a passionate advocate for ensuring that the technologies we deliver solve the very toughest of our customer problems.

Previously a VMware Principal Engineer, Subrahmanyam has been a key player within the VMware Research and Development group since 2000 when he joined VMwares virtual machine monitor group. He has contributed to the design of the MMU virtualization, performance improvements, paravirtual interfaces design principles, and more recently symmetric multiprocessor fault tolerance for virtual machines. Subrahmanyam has earned 26 issued patents, 21 while at VMware. He has two publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Prior to VMware, Subrahmanyam was part of the California Language Lab at HP. There he worked on code generation and optimization techniques for the PA-RISC and the IA-64 processor architectures. Subrahmanyam earned his Bachelors of Technology at Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, India, and later earned his Master of Science in Computer Science from State University of New York at Buffalo.

The $800,000 endowment is intended to honor Subrahmanyams far-reaching contributions and will support computer science programs at Stanford University. When combined with previous gifts, VMware has funded a total of $2.4 million in university endowments as part of its commitment to give back by supporting the next generation of talent engineers.
