Horrible Science

Filming has begun in London on Horrible Science a brand new comedy entertainment series for CITV. Based on the tremendously popular children s books, written by Nick Arnold and illustrated by Tony De Saulles and published by Scholastic, the show finds a lovable family of characters trying to put on a spectacular science show. Unfortunately for them this often results in on-screen chaos, blazing backstage rows and gooey slapstick.

Each episode has a central scientific theme (Gruesome Guts, Vicious Veg, Bulging Brains, Chemical Chaos etc) which is explored with comedy sketches, experiments, and songs. There is also an interview with a celebrity guest , where a guest actor plays a celebrated scientist from history (eg. Marie Curie, Robert Hooke, Edward Jenner). Guest actors already lined up include Marcus Garvey, David Armand and Alexander Armstrong.

Aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 12, the ten-part series is produced by Toff, the production company run by Alexander Armstrong and Ben Miller and co-owned by Hat Trick Productions, and has been jointly funded by ITV, the Wellcome Trust, ABC Australia, and Discovery Asia.

Horrible Science delights in the messy, gory and macabre, but as well as wallowing in all things yucky, it is full of fascinating science. Although primarily aimed at children, adults will also find plenty to wonder and laugh at.

Horrible Science stars Ben Miller (Ballot Monkeys, Horrible Histories, Lost in Paradise), stand-up comedian Chris Martin, Letty Butler (Wolf Blood, Murder On The Home Front), Tom Bell (Wizards Versus Aliens, Episodes), Eleanor Lawrence (Mid-Morning Matters With Alan Partridge, Phoneshop), Jason Forbes (Professor Branestawm, Pompidou) and Susan Wokoma (Bluestone 42, Uncle).

The Commissioner for ITV is Jamila Metran who comments: We are delighted that CITV will be the home of Horrible Science. Gruesome, funny and topical, Toff have created a fantastic series that will take our viewers on an unforgettable and entertaining voyage of scientific discovery!

Ben Miller, who stars and is Executive Producer, says: "I ve loved science ever since I was a kid, and making Horrible Science has been a dream come true. Horrible Science is written by David Armand, Marc Haynes, Will MacLean, Ali Crockatt, David Scott, Julia Kent and Mark Oswin. It is produced by John Pocock (Some Girls, The Kumars) and directed by Simon Gibney (Horrible Histories, Watson & Oliver). The Executive Producers are Jimmy Mulville and Ben Miller. The composer is Richard Easter.
