Verizon Readies Robust Network Infrastructure Plans for FIFA World Cup 2026

As preparations ramp up for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Verizon has outlined a sweeping connectivity and infrastructure initiative that will underpin broadcast operations, fan engagement, and venue communications across host cities in the United States.

Serving as the Official Telecommunication Services Sponsor for the tournament, Verizon is deploying a combination of 5G, fiber, and private network solutions designed to support both in-stadium experiences and global broadcast distribution.

At the venue level, the company has significantly upgraded network capacity to handle unprecedented data demand. With fans expected to consume more than 50 terabytes of data per match inside a stadium, Verizon has added additional 5G spectrum to increase capacity by an estimated three to five times. Infrastructure enhancements include thousands of under-seat antennas and targeted 4G/5G systems aimed at improving connectivity in upper seating areas. Additional small cells and temporary sites have also been deployed around stadiums and in surrounding areas to support transit hubs, fan festivals, and watch-party environments.

From a broadcast and production standpoint, Verizon's fiber and network services will play a central role in the FIFA Broadcast Contribution Network (BCN), delivering high-bandwidth connectivity between venues and the International Broadcast Center. The infrastructure is designed to support the transport of high-quality video feeds and data, including real-time player and ball tracking information used in modern broadcast workflows.

Private 5G networks will also be deployed within stadiums to support low-latency applications tied to both broadcast and officiating. Among those use cases is connectivity for referee-mounted cameras, enabling new point-of-view content that can be integrated into live coverage. These networks will extend beyond competition venues to FIFA Fan Festival locations, supporting both operational needs and fan-facing digital experiences.

In addition, Verizon plans to utilize 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) to quickly deploy connectivity for temporary installations, including pop-up broadcast positions, retail activations, and event operations. Network slicing capabilities will be used to prioritize performance for select applications requiring guaranteed bandwidth and low latency.

Beyond broadcast and fan connectivity, Verizon's efforts also include support for public safety communications through its Frontline service, as well as infrastructure investments intended to leave a lasting impact on host communities. Those upgrades are expected to enhance long-term access to high-speed connectivity for residents and local businesses following the tournament.

With the scale of the 2026 World Cup set to stretch across multiple cities and venues, the network backbone will be a critical component in delivering both the live production workflows and connected fan experiences expected of a global event of this magnitude.
