South Africa and the Netherlands have signed co-production treaty for film and other audiovisual works. The co-production pact aims at boosting the audiovisual industries through cultural and economic exchanges between South Africa and the Netherlands, allowing a wider access to audiences in each country and accessing financing schemes. by Elsa Keslassy
Criteria for eligibility include a certain amount of performing, technical and craft contribution from each co-producer, while the financial support has to represent a minimum of 10 percent and can't exceed 90 percent of the production costs.
Pact was negotiated between the Netherlands Film Fund and the National Film and Video Foundation, which will review applications. It was signed by Jet Bussemaker, Dutch minister for Culture and Nathi Mthethwa, the South African minister of arts and culture.
South Africa, which has a growing film industry and has become a popular shooting destination, already has co-produciton treaties with Germany, Canada, Italy, United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, Ireland and Australia.

Filmmakers from both our countries are also going to benefit from the DTI incentive scheme, which its aim is to encourage and attract big-budget productions and post production. We look forward to co-creating' and enhancing the international profile of both the countries through our storytelling, said Zama Mkosi, CEO at the National Film and Video Foundation.
Doreen Boonekamp, CEO of the Netherlands Film Fund, pointed out the Netherlands previously collaborated with South African film professionals on Black Butterflies, The Price of Sugar and The Dream of Shahrazad.
The Netherlands, meanwhile, has co-production treaties with France, Canada, Germany and China and will soon sign a co-production pact with French-speaking Belgium.
