New Photography Exhibit, Beyond the Story: National Geographic Unpublished, To Open at National Geographic Museum Friday, Feb. 8

WASHINGTON (Feb. 7, 2013)-The latest installment of the annual exhibition Beyond the Story: National Geographic Unpublished will be on display at the National Geographic Museum's M Street gallery from Feb. 8 through July 7, 2013. The free exhibition features a selection of the thousands of stunning yet unpublished photographs made for National Geographic magazine last year.

The exhibition will showcase 42 images by 29 photographers for 33 stories that were featured in the magazine in 2012. They include unpublished images by award-winning photographer Paul Nicklen of emperor penguins, Amy Toensing's images for a story on New Guinea's cave people and Brent Stirton's photographs for the story on the elephant ivory trade. Images from renowned photographers such as David Alan Harvey, William Albert Allard and Joel Sartore also will be featured.

Each year, more than 1.5 million images are captured by National Geographic photographers for magazine stories - with only about a dozen chosen for publication for each story. The photographers work closely with the magazine's photo editors to select the images best suited for the magazine's pages.

Hundreds of photographs are left unseen from the thousands taken for each assignment, said National Geographic magazine photo editor and curator for the exhibition Alice Gabriner. This exhibition is a great way to showcase some of the amazing photographs that would not normally be available to the public.

On Monday, Feb. 25, the museum will host a special event with Gabriner, who will give an insider's look into the magazine's picture selection process and a guided tour of the exhibition. This will be followed by a reception with the magazine's staff. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at www.ngmuseum.org.

Also open in the museum's 17th Street galleries during this time are Birds of Paradise: Amazing Avian Evolution, which will run through May, and Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship, which will be open March 8 through Sept. 2.

The National Geographic Museum, 1145 17th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed Dec. 25. Though the photography exhibitions in the museum's M Street gallery and outdoors are free, the exhibitions in the 17th Street galleries are ticketed. Admission is $11 for adults; $9 for National Geographic members, military, students, seniors and groups of 25 or more; $7 for children 5-12; and free (reservation required) for local school, student and youth groups (18 and under; advance reservation required).
