Heightened video production values have become a must at thoroughbred racetracks nationwide, with patrons now expecting a crystal clear picture when they watch the live action. At Remington Park in Oklahoma City, integrator SVT has responded with an HD upgrade that includes eight Ikegami HDK-55 full digital HDTV cameras.
A world-class thoroughbred racetrack with a grandstand that accommodates 10,000 spectators, Remington Park is also home to a 60 40-foot video backboard that stands as one of the nation's largest, simulcasting live to Las Vegas and worldwide. To ensure precision imagery for all viewers, SVT specified the Ikegami HDK-55, which is part of Ikegami's versatile Unicam HD series.
When patrons watch live video from Remington Park now, you can actually see the veins of the horses as they run the track, says David Scott, Director of Engineering for SVT. Our directive from the track's management was to make the video look as good as anything on an HDTV at home. We accomplished that with the Ikegami HDK-55.
Previously outfitted with Ikegami HL-65 cameras, Remington Park went with Ikegami cameras again for its HD upgrade. Equipped with 1080i 2.3 megapixels AIT CCDs, the Ikegami HDK-55 proved to be a cost-effective option that also provides the racetrack with high performance. These cameras provide pristine resolution, and they have an impressive signal-to-noise ratio, Scott notes.
At Remington Park, each of the eight Ikegami HDK-55 cameras has their own live operator, connected via fiber. One of the cameras is mobile, while the other seven are in fixed positions, each covering their own section of the track including Pan, Pan B, front turn, back turn, balcony, paddock, and the Winners Circle.
One reason Remington Park remained with Ikegami was their proven reliability under extremely challenging conditions. These cameras take a beating, Scott confirms. Ikegami systems showed us how durable they are, and thoroughbred racetracks are tough environments. Dirt is flying everywhere, and it can literally get into the cameras. We always have to take weather into account, because Oklahoma City is vulnerable to damage from hail or tornadoes, with temperatures ranging from 20 Director of Engineering for SVT. Ikegami cameras are workhorses that keep on going, even when the schedule is running seven days a week.
Ikegami's service has always stood out, continues Scott. You'll get immediate support if a camera has an issue, including an immediate replacement if that's what you need.
Remington Park is delivering an extremely crisp picture for today's bettors who demand it. Making an HD upgrade was the right move for Remington Park, David Scott says. The Ikegami HDK-55 is essential to the viewing experience.
