Specialist Career Pas: ZEI Appoints New Fellow

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 08.05.2017. Dr. Rudolf von B nau has been designated a Fellow, the highest rung on the ZEISS Technical Ladder. President and CEO of Carl Zeiss AG, Dr. Michael Kaschke, congratulated him on his appointment and thanked him for his excellent work to date.

The newest ZEISS Fellow is a US-born physicist. He joined ZEISS's Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology area 20 years ago and went on to work for over 10 years at the Medical Technology business group, specifically in the ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment area. Today, von B nau works in the central research department and is in charge of Biomedical Innovations.

Kaschke underlined the achievements of Dr. von B nau: In addition to his vast technical knowledge, Mr. von B nau has a profound understanding of medical applications and requirements. He has shaped ophthalmology at ZEISS as we know it.

Dr. von B nau's appointment is due in large part to his considerable involvement with the roadmap in the area of ophthalmology and his contribution to groundbreaking innovations. Examples of this are his work on innovative products for the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases and for cataract, such as the launch of the first-generation femtosecond laser technology and the definition of the biometry roadmap with the highly successful IOL Master product line. To achieve this, von B nau worked hand in hand with ophthalmologists across the world.

There are now four Fellows at ZEISS: Dr. Winfried Kaiser from Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology was appointed to the highest level of the Technical Ladder in 2007. Dr. Michael Totzeck and Dr. Michael Kempe from Corporate Research and Technology followed in 2015.

The ZEISS Technical Ladder

The rank of Fellow is the highest rung on the Technical Ladder, which was launched in fiscal year 2005/06 to give employees in research and development departments a career path of equivalent status to the classic management option at ZEISS.

The Technical Ladder is key to the innovative power of ZEISS and offers experts with an excellent technical repertoire attractive professional development prospects. At the very top of the Technical Ladder are the Fellows, those appointed by the Executive Board itself. There are currently more than 600 employees on the Technical Ladder around the globe.
