Entertainment without barriers where stories include everyone
Netflix, in collaboration with the National Association for the Blind, celebrates inclusive storytelling
Stories have power to connect, inspire, and bring joy. But, that power is truly meaningful when everyone can be a part of it. Reinforcing the importance of inclusive and accessible entertainment, Netflix hosted a special pre-release screening of The Great Indian Kapil Show (Independence Day Special Episode) for the visually impaired community. Held at the Netflix India office in Mumbai, in collaboration with the National Association for the Blind, Mumbai, the screening was enabled with built-in audio descriptions, ensuring the episode could be fully experienced by all. In attendance at the screening were Shri Tukaram Mundhe, IAS (Secretary, Divyang Kalyan Department, Government of Maharashtra), and Mr. Prakash Magdum, IIS (Managing Director, National Film Development Corporation of India). The beloved cast of the show joined for a special surprise and a curated talent showcase by the blind community - Kapil Sharma,Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda and Archana Puran Singh, to celebrate this special moment of laughter and inclusion.
Bringing Accessibility into the Heart of Entertainment
Netflix globally has been creating Audio Descriptions for its content since 2015. Today, all Netflix original titles come with built-in audio descriptions, a voiceover that narrates key visual elements like facial expressions, physical actions, settings, and scene changes. This makes the story more accessible for blind or low vision audiences. The platform is further enabled with additional accessibility features and plug-ins such as screen reader compatibility, customizable subtitles, and assistive listening systems to ensure that entertainment can be enjoyed by everyone, without barriers.
Sharing his thoughts on the initiative, Kapil Sharma, actor and host of The Great Indian Kapil Show, added, As performers, there's nothing more rewarding than knowing your work can reach more hearts. Being part of this special screening, where every joke, every moment could be felt and experienced equally, was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do. I'm truly glad to have been part of it. Entertainment sabke liye hain aur agar accessibility ke dwara sab humaare show ko anubhav kar sakte hain, isse behtar kya hoga."
Dr. Vimal Kumar Dengla, Hon. Secretary General, National Association for the Blind, said, "Entertainment should be for everyone, and when platforms like Netflix prioritise accessibility, it opens up a world of entertainment for our community. Audio description is more than a feature; its inclusion in action. We truly appreciate this collaboration and hope to see many more such initiatives in the future."
Speaking at the event, Shri Tukaram Mundhe, IAS, Secretary, Persons with Disabilities Welfare Department, Maharashtra highlighted the deeper social significance of such initiatives saying, "Accessibility is not just assistance - it is empowerment, inclusion, and connection. Technology like audio descriptions ensures that our visually impaired brothers and sisters can experience cinema fully. Netflix and the National Association for the Blind have shown what compassion and innovation can achieve together, and I thank them for this initiative. The Government of Maharashtra is committed to working with all stakeholders, to ensure that no one is left behind in our cultural experiences. Together, we can build a truly inclusive society. We are committed to building an inclusive society where every person with a disability has access to opportunities, resources, and experiences that enrich their lives. Our policies and programs are designed with sensitivity to their unique needs, but we know that true inclusion requires more than just policy, it requires innovation, collaboration, and a heart full of empathy and compassion. Building on this, Mr. Prakash Magdum, Managing Director, National Film Development Corporation of India, underlined the role of accessibility in cinema, "Cinema is an audiovisual medium we experience together, and when we say together,' everyone should be included. Using technology like audio descriptions empowers our visually impaired brothers and sisters to enjoy films in the same way, and we should make full use of it. At NFDC, we are working to ensure accessibility is built across all stories. Netflix's initiative is truly commendable, and a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together. I also want to thank the National Association for The Blind India for their continued efforts towards accessibility and inclusion. Together, we can carry forward this effort to make cinema, what we call a collective viewing experience, truly inclusive."
Speaking about the initiative, Tanya Bami, Series Head, Netflix India, said, "Storytelling feels complete only when everyone has the opportunity to be a part of it. At Netflix, we're deeply committed to making our content more accessible. All our titles globally are available with audio descriptions, and we've hosted similar inclusive screenings in other countries too.
