NFVF Releases Mid-Year Box Office Report - 2015

The NFVF has released the South African Box Office Report for the first half of the year. The Box Office Report is a collation and analysis of data on the performance of films released in South Africa.

The report shows that in the first half of 2015, a total 121 feature films were released at box office with a total gross of over R548 million (up to 28 July). Local productions generated over R28 million in revenue, taking 5% of the market share.

When compared to the same period in 2014, an increase in titles released has been noted with this year releases recording 10 more titles., Additionally, the South Africa's gross revenue saw a significant progression from R382 million to R548 million. Local productions however, fell from the R33 million to R28 million, a 15 percent drop, a figure that can be attributed to lesser films being released, as there were only 8 South African films released in the first half of 2015 as compared to 12 in 2014.

According to the figures, films that performed well at the Box Office included Fast & Furious 7 earning R72 million, while Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World took R40 million each. The top 3 local films were Ballade vir n Enkeling at R7.9 million, followed by Mooirivier at R5.7 million, and Strikdas with R4.2 million.

The report also revealed that Comedy and Romance were the most popular genre in the first half the year with 33% and 29% respectively. At 28% was the Mystery genre, then followed by Drama at 10%.

The second half of 2015 however is promising for the South African film industry and consumers, with the release of some of the best local productions which have already won awards at local and international festivals. The release of Ayanda - winner of the LA Film Festival jury award; and Necktie Youth, Durban International Film Festival's (DIFF) best South African feature award winner and the recipient of the international jury award for best director, promise to change film consumption pattern on local screens. The release of Tell Me Sweet Something, Love the One you Love, and the recently released Thina Sobabili, Impunity and Schuks Pay Back the Money also promise to dazzle the cinema going consumers.

The industry has a growing talent that is producing entertaining work. The numerous accolades being awarded to local productions is testament to this. The NFVF is however working on the development of the South African Audience to guarantee that local films are watched and enjoyed by all South Africans, and that most of the films produced by emerging filmmakers are told on the big screen.
