Tshwane One City Film Festival Announces its Opening-Night Film
28/07/2014:The world acclaimed and award-winning documentary film, Standing On My Sisters Shoulders will be the opening night movie at the inaugural Tshwane One City Film Festival.
The screening will be at 8pm on Tuesday 12 August at the South African State Theatre, Pretoria. The main festival runs from 12-15 August, presenting a series of activities including workshops, seminars, conferences and networking forums.
Standing On My Sisters Shoulders is about the Mississippi Civil Rights heroines and courageous women who faught for equal rights and changed the course of history.
The film which is directed by Laura Lipson and produced by Joan Sadoff, carries a powerful message for South Africa and the world. The film features prominent US veteran activists such as Unita Blackwell, Mae Bertha Carter, Victoria Gray Adams and Annie Devine.
Standing On My Sisters Shoulders is a legacy project and a reminder about the selfless contributions and sacrifices made by our own liberation heroines and stalwarts such as Lilian Ngoyi, Ruth Mompati, Hellen Joseph, Dorothy Nyembe, Ellen Khuzwayo, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and many other remarkable pioneers said Basil Dube, the executive director of the festival.
Dube said that the festival is a progressive platform to celebrate women's month and South Africa's 20 years of freedom and democracy.
Other movies to be screened at the Tshwane One City Film Festival include The Last Supper by Rietz Naran, Sipho Mutsi The Bare-footed Comrade by Jerry Tsie, Mothers' Day by Tsitsi Dangarembga, Revenge by Kenneth Mabena,Across The Colour Bar by Nkantu Dosi, Archbishop Desmond Tutu's Story and 1994 Bloody Miracle by Sabido Productions.
