To augment the Keynote speech of Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg, short film was created that showed the company's history in time lapse.
When the CEO of a major global player gives a keynote speech at an international trade show it's considered a major event. For Mr. Vestberg keynote speech, The Networked Society, at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a short film was to be played to set the stage for the speech.
The film begins in the year 1876 and illustrates the vision of the company founder Magnus Ericsson as well as highlights and milestones in the company's history. The film starts in black-and-white with flickering and unstable camera work in bold and striking scenery conjuring up memories of filmmakers such as George Mlis. As the film continues through time its look changes along with the company's innovations: the grainy silent film look gives way to a flicker-free sepia-toned film. Not only the film's quality is modernized but also its set design and props improve, reflecting advancements that have been made.
Finally, the monochrome depiction of the company history melds to colored images, which also emphasizes the transition to the age of digital communication. The end of the film then invokes the networked society as we know it today, setting the stage perfectly for Mr. Vestberg's keynote speech.
The two-minute film was created entirely in MAXON CINEMA 4D. CINEMA 4D offered the flexibility and comprehensive toolset required to create the desired effects and to bring this project to fruition. The team at Onesize, who was responsible for the film's creation, had to pay particular attention to the camera work. The entire film had to be visualized in a single take. The company's development and the passing of time had to be synchronized in the film, which made it a real challenge to depict the historic changes. The right render settings had to be defined for the continuously running camera in order to create an optimized quality and render time ratio without interrupting the film's continuity.
The result not only impressed Mr. Vestberg's audience but also caught the attention of the jury at the US International Film & Video Festival 2012 which awarded the film a Golden Camera in the category Special Productions: Opening Films. With regard to the role CINEMA 4D played in this project, producer Rogier Hendricks states: CINEMA 4D is an excellent tool that has helped us become who we are over the last in ten years an internationally successful production studio for challenging visuals!
